Events in the Time of COVID-19

Under normal circumstances, the society aims to host three events each year:

  • A boat race dinner, held jointly with the Cambridge Society of South Australia, usually in May each year. This event focuses on the rowing heritage of both universities and offers the chance to relive the recent boat races over a formal dinner.
  • An invited lecture, with a strong connection to Oxford. Previously given by members of the society, as well as prominent visitors from interstate and overseas this offers an opportunity for intellectual debate on a matter of interest. Usually held during the winter we aim to host this as a free event each year and provide an opportunity for drinks and conversation amongst the membership.
  • The Sundowner is our annual garden party held in the late spring to welcome the newly-announced Rhodes scholar prior to their departure to Oxford.

Our 2020 events programme was disrupted by COVID-19. There was no boat race to replay and a snap lockdown in South Australia caused the late notice cancellation of the Sundowner.

However we did run a popular and well received virtual lecture by Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Enterprise, UniSA. Professor Hughes-Warrington spoke on ‘Machine-Made Histories’ and answered a plethora of questions from a large and engaged audience.
